Fred G. Dale Planetarium

Hired to paint the Fred G. Dale Planetarium in the Carhart Science building at Wayne State College during a remodel. As that work was underway, the college increased the budget so the murals could continue — down the stairway of every floor.

The Idea

A planetarium that had to feel like walking into space, and a science building that needed the same gravity on every landing. One commission that grew into a whole vertical gallery: astronomy, chemistry, physics, biology — painted as you climb.

The Build

Started in the Fred G. Dale Planetarium. Then the stairs: Earth in section, the periodic table in hexagons, Newton’s cradle, flasks, an atom, a microscope, an octopus, a jungle window, galaxies around a door, a solar system on a long wall.

The Result

Wayne State College, Carhart Science. The planetarium holds the sky. The stairwell holds the rest of the universe.
